GRAHAM — In the final spring dual match before the District 6-4A tennis tournament, the Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions won eight of 19 matches against Iowa Park here Saturday.
The format of the event featured No. 1 and No. 2 seeds competing in their respective draws. The 1s faced the 2s in a “warm-up” round, then matches pitting the 1s vs. 1s and 2 vs. 2s followed.
The Lady Lions won all four singles matches as No. 1 Bailey Bishop defeated Iowa Park No. 2 Teague (8-0) and No. 1 Wells (6-3, 6-3), while Brownwood No. 2 Emma Sharpe also knocked off Wells (8-5) and Teague (6-0, 6-0).
Brownwood’s No. 1 mixed doubles team Brittney Blake and Zach Hall chalked up wins over Iowa Park No. 1 Witherspoon and Pedon (6-2, 7-5) along with No. 2 Fisher and Dishman (8-1), while Brownwood No. 2 team Cade Rector and Illiana Arenivas came up short against Witherspoon and Pedon (8-2) and Fisher and Dishman (6-0, 6-1).
In girls doubles action, the Lady Lions No. 1 team of Heather Williams and Piper Barberie upended Iowa Park No. 2 Hall and Le (8-4), but fell to No. 1 Hambright and Swanner (7-6, 6-2). The Lady Lions No. 2 team of Sam Etheridge and Dariela Lares dropped their matches to Hall and Le (6-1, 7-5) and Hambright and Swanner (8-6).
Brownwood’s No. 1 boys doubles team of Josh Dean and Jeremy Roberson took down Iowa Park No. 2 Pruett and Bradshaw (8-1) but lost their match to No. 1 Fishman and Nix (6-0, 6-3). The Lions No. 2 team of Gabe Hinojosa and Michael Gomez fell to Fishman and Nix (8-6) and no score was reported against Pruett and Bradshaw.
In boys singles competition, the Lions were swept as No. 1 Matthew Thompson fell to Iowa Park No. 1 Fudge (6-1, 6-1) and No. 2 McIlroy (8-4), while Brownwood No. 2 Tyler Langley was downed by McIlory (7-5, 6-0) and Fudge (8-1).
The District 6-4A tennis tournament will be held at Graham Tuesday and Wednesday.
