BURNET — The Brownwood Lions posted a 1-2 pool record in their first 7-on-7 Division II state qualifier at Burnet Saturday, and will have to wait at least another week in their effort to earn a 17th straight state tournament berth.

The Lions began the day with a 31-20 loss to Boerne, which had already qualified for state, then followed with a 33-18 victory over Bay City. Brownwood closed the day with a 35-19 loss to Brady.

In the win over Bay City, quarterback McLane Moore completed 19 of 25 passes with three touchdowns, while Clayton Bertrand connected on 2 of 6 attempts with a scoring toss.

Top playmakers at receiver included Braden Jetton with four receptions and one touchdown, Tristin Revada with three catches and two touchdowns and Jeremy Brown added three grabs and a trip to the end zone. Jordan Ortega also finished with four catches, Nick Salazar hauled in three receptions, Crystan Wright caught a couple of passes and Grant Fanara and Blaine Hughes tallied one catch apiece.

Defensively, Fanara returned an interception for a Brownwood touchdown and Dylan Hickey also picked off a pass.

In the first game against Boerne, Moore was 23 of 34 through the air with a pair of scoring tosses while Bertrand completed 6 of 8 attempts with a touchdown.

Wright hauled in 11 receptions, including a pair of touchdowns, while Brown caught five passes and Gavin Jefferson chipped in four grabs with a trip to the end zone. Fanara added three catches, Hughes and Jetton finished with two apiece and Revada, Salazar and Ortega each caught a pass.

In the finale against Brady, the Lions fell into a 21-0 hole with the Bulldogs returning an early interception for a touchdown.

Moore finished 10 of 19 with a touchdown and three interceptions, while Bertrand was 3 of 9 with one scoring toss.

Wright caught three passes, Jetton added two with a trip to the end zone and Fanara hauled in a touchdown reception. Hughes, Jefferson, Revada, Brown and Ortega each finished with one catch.

Defensively, Brown intercepted a pass and lateraled to Fanara for a touchdown.

The Lions will be back in action Saturday at Gatesville in their second state qualifier.
