Luna Maya Ribbon Cutting

Luna Maya is a baby and children’s boutique offering everything from clothing to swaddles, diaper bags, and much more. Luna Maya has been operating as a booth in Shaw’s Marketplace and was established in 2020 by Rachel Howell. The new location features beautiful windows lining the front wall of the boutique offering a light and airy feel to the large but cozy space. Rachel plans to host events to bring the Brownwood community together. Rachel found great success while operating out of Shaw’s Marketplace and will continue to operate her booth concurrently with the new location until the end of 2022. Photo contributed

Little Lionette Camp

Unlocked doors were ‘first line of defense’

The Uvalde massacre began after the 18-year-old gunman entered the school through a door that could only be locked from the outside and then got inside a classroom that had a busted lock. That’s according to experts who testified Tuesday before the Texas state Senate. Securing doors has long been a focus of school safety drills, and experts said the inability to do so during the May 24 attack that left 19 children and two teachers dead is raising alarms among experts and politicians. State Sen. Paul Bettencourt said unlockable doors make lockdowns and shooter training worthless, adding that there was “zero obstacle to the shooter.”

Uvalde schools police chief placed on leave

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District police Chief Pete Arredondo has been placed on administrative leave amid criticism of his response to the worst school shooting in Texas history. Uvalde CISD Superintendent Hal Harrell announced the move in a news release Wednesday, one day after Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw placed much of the blame of the delayed response to the shooting at Arredondo’s feet.
