John W. Carter of Early, TX. fell asleep in death on August 4, 2022. He was 85 years old. John was born to Thomas M. and Charleem Garner Carter on October 30, 1936, in Comanche County. He was the oldest of six boys. At age 17 he joined the US Army and retired after 25 years. After retirement he worked in real estate back in the town he grew up in Brownwood. He also worked for TX DHS for 10 years and retired. In 1958 he married Ethel Ann Cason, that union produced five girls and one boy. In 1979 he married Reba Elizabeth Budd they added two more children by adoption. John enjoyed his life in the army and was able to travel the world. He served two tours in Vietnam in the signal Corps. He was the proud father of Leslie, Patricia, Robert, Victoria, Susan, Christine, Crystal, and Lisa. Although he quit high school to join the army, he was able to attend the university of Maryland and graduate with an Associate in Arts degree in 1976. His greatest achievement was becoming on of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was baptized on June 29, 1991; where he served as an elder and regular pioneer in the past. His fondest memories were serving where the need was great in Mexico English. The last years of his life he was struggling with Alzheimer’s, so he was not able to engage in the ministry that he loved. He looked forward to the time when earth will be a paradise as God intended and he will be resurrected and be whole in body and in mind. John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert, Paul, twins Harry and Larry, and stepson David Budd. He is survived by his of 43 years, Elizabeth, his brother Curtis of Arizona, his children Leslie Hines of Kerens, Patricia Pruett (Tony) of Brookesmith, Robert Carter of Amarillo, Victoria Lew (Michael), of Round Rock, Susan Kozora (Mark) of Comanche, Christine Hegesteg (Chris) of Poway, CA, Crystal Carter of Brownwood, Lisa Hildreth (Joshua) of Brownwood, stepson Mark Budd (Jan), of Smithville, TX., stepson Steven Budd (Jackie), of N. Augusta, SC. He is also survived by numerous precious grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Funeral arrangements are by Heritage Davis Morris Funeral Home. Burial will be in Winchell Cemetery.
