Early — Early City Council members on Tuesday will consider approving and providing details regarding a special election this May for the proposition of terminating the Type-A Early Economic Development Corporation and concurrently authorize the creation of the City of Early Municipal Development Corporation.

The council agreed last month to move on from its current Type A Corporation status and move toward the MDD over the Type B, which would allow the EDC to spend money on retail and community development. Residents will vote on this May 7.

“We want to help businesses and bring jobs into our community,” Early EDC director Shawn Russell said in a recent Bulletin article regarding the likely change. “We also want those businesses to grow and expand.”

Early is among 101 cities statewide that are currently on a Type A, which is geared toward funding industrial developmental projects such as business infrastructure, manufacturing and research development.
