A 35th District Court sentenced Leslie Hastings, 36 to life in prison Thursday afternoon after convicting him of the aggravated sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl.
The sexual assault occurred in Brownwood in July 2015, according to testimony.
The girl is a relative of a woman who was Hastings’ girlfriend at the time of the assault, Brownwood police said earlier.  Hastings, who has been free on $100,000 bond, faced a minimum of 25 years in prison because of his two previous convictions.
Hastings was convicted in 2005 of burglary of a habitation and convicted in 2011 of family violence assault, according to enhancement paragraphs in the December 2015 indictment.
Hastings is listed in jail records as having a Brady address.
The girl told police she was at home with Hastings when he assaulted her, police said earlier. The girl told police Hastings held his hand over her mouth and told her not to report it.
The girl’s relatives testified during the punishment phase of the trial that Hastings had caused much trauma for the family and said there was nothing positive about his relationship with the family.
Hastings had been a very good high school athlete and could have succeeded in college had he made better choices, according to testimony.
