Department of Public Safety trooper John Moody had one word to describe why he was in the right place Wednesday night to spot a stolen Kubota utility vehicle — occupied a pair who allegedly stole it from a Mills County ranch.
“Luck,” Moody said by phone Thursday morning.
Moody watched Brittany Pence, 21, turn the vehicle off of FM 45 and drive it into the Kohler Company truck entrance.
Moody arrested Pence and the other person in the UTV, Tyler May, 20, on charges of theft of property in connection with the stolen vehicle, Brown County Jail records state. Pence was also charged with resisting arrest, and May had Runnels County warrants for evading arrest and burglary of a habitation.
Jail records show Pence with a Brownwood address and May with a Cisco address. Moody said he believes Pence now lives in Cicso.
Troopers, along with Mills and Brown County sheriff’s deputies, had been involved in searching for Pence and May when Moody spotted the stolen Kubota.
Officers first started looking for the two when they fled on foot from a one-vehicle accident in Mills County late Wednesday afternoon, Moody said.
Officers could not locate them, but Mills County authorities notified Brown County authorities around 10:30 p.m. the two might be heading for Brownwood in a stolen Kubota. Moody said he was responding to the call and preparing to drive toward the Brown-Mills County line when he saw the Kubota being driven into the Kohler truck entrance.
Moody did not know why the two were turning into Kohler.
“(Pence) resisted arrest for a little bit,” Moody said. “We got them both in custody.”
