Tragedy again has befallen the tight-knit Brownwood ISD family as well as the Brown County community.

McKenzie Cox — a 2016 Brownwood High School graduate continuing her education and track and field career at Tarleton State University — died Friday evening at Brownwood Regional Medical Center due to injuries suffered in a one-vehicle accident earlier in the day.

The wreck occurred at 12:34 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 67/377 nine miles west of Comanche as Cox, 18, lost control of the 2004 Ford sedan she was driving, according to a press release issued by the Texas Department of Pubic Safety. The release further stated that the vehicle rolled and the driver, not wearing a seat beat, was ejected.

Cox won the Region I-4A girls high jump championship in 2015 as a junior with a career-best effort of 5-3 and went on to compete at the UIL State Championships at the University of Texas at Austin. Cox also qualified for regionals her senior and sophomore seasons.

On April 27, just weeks before graduation, Cox signed a national letter of intent with Tarleton.
