Brownwood police responded to numerous reports of assaults and alcohol-related incidents in the days leading up to — and including — Christmas weekend.
Stephen Matthews, 30, of Brownwood, was one of numerous people arrested in the incidents. Brownwood police arrested Matthews on charges of DWI with child under 15 after the van he was driving — with three children in the vehicle — hit a utility pole early on Christmas Eve morning, police said.
Matthews, who abandoned the van, was also arrested on a charge related to leaving the accident scene and on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, jail records state. The assault charge was related to an assault on Matthews’ wife, police said.
Matthews remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of bonds totaling $81,500.
According to reports by officers Noe Acosta and Cpl. Jesse Mares:
Acosta was dispatched to the 1000 block of Beaver on a report of an abandoned Chevrolet Uplander, which had hit a pole. Police ran the license plate and identified Matthews as the owner. Officers went to Matthews’ apartment in the 1500 block of Terrace, where three children who’d been in the van were located along with Matthews.
The children had injuries, and medical personnel arrived to treat them.
Police learned the children’s mother — Matthews’ wife — had placed the children in the van to try and get away from Matthews. Matthews forced his wife out of the vehicle with the children inside, police were told.
Matthews was taken to Brownwood Regional Medical Center for a blood draw.
Officers also encountered Matthews’ wife, who had blood on her nose and upper lip. The woman told police she’d been kicked in the face.
