A deputy providing traffic control for a disabled 18-wheeler early Saturday morning arrested the driver of a pickup that approached at high speed before making a sharp turn into a parking lot on DWI and other charges.
Deputy Toby Mathis arrested Cesar Rodriguez, 27, of Brownwood, on charges of DWI, evading arrest and resisting arrest after short foot pursuit, Mathis’ report states.
The incident happened around 12:30 a.m. or 1 a.m., Chief Deputy of Enforcement James Stroope said.
    According to Mathis’ report:
Mathis was providing traffic control in the 400 block of East Commerce when he saw a Dodge Ram 1500 traveling east on East Commerce at high speed. The driver slammed on the pickup’s brakes and turned sharply into the Whataburger parking lot.
Mathis attempted a traffic stop but the driver accelerated away. The driver stopped behind the Hampton Inn and got out, triggering a foot pursuit.
