A report of the armed robbery of a convenience store Tuesday night led to the arrest of a Brownwood teen who allegedly called 9-1-1 and falsely reported the robbery, police said.
Matthew Mendez, 17, remained Wednesday in the Brown County Jail on charges making a false alarm or report and public intoxication by a minor, jail records state.
According to a report by  Brownwood officer Kayla Moore:
Moore was dispatched at 9:05 p.m. to the 7-Eleven store at 1501 Coggin on a report of two armed robbers, including one with an AK-47.  As Moore approached, she saw a male run from from the direction of the store with something in his hand. Moore exited her patrol vehicle and told the male to stop, then drew her pistol and told him again to stop.
The male, identified as Mendez, threw a 24-ounce beer can behind a tree and stopped.
Moore walked Mendez over to the store and watched video surveillance that showed Mendez enter the store and set a coffee mug with alcoholic beverage on the counter. Mendez asked to make a phone call on the store’s phone, and talked on the phone for several minutes while walking on the phone.
Mendez was the only person near the phone that was used to make the 9-1-1 call at the time the call was made. The video showed Mendez leaving the store.
The clerk said Mendez entered the store and asked to use the phone, and officer Jayme Bowman entered the store seconds after Mendez left, asking where the suspects were. The clerk said she’d been there since 7 p.m. and  said Mendez was only person who made a phone call.
