BLANKET — The makeup of the Blanket school board race has changed with the withdrawal of Place 5 incumbent Vicki Jenkins.
Jenkins was one of the five school board members who voted on Feb. 12 against renewing the contract of first-year head coach and athletic director Brent Williamson.
Jenkins withdrew from the race Wednesday, school district officials said.
Autumn Hood remains as the only other candidate in Place 5.
School board president James Heard is not seeking re-election in Place 6. Heard had turned in an application to to file but withdrew it the day after the Feb. 12 school board meeting, district officials said. Heard was also one of the “no” votes in the Williamson contract vote.
Place 6 candidates are Robert Menchaca and Edwin Davis.
In Place 7, incumbent Chris Furry — who voted in favor of renewing Williamson’s contract — is challenged by Gayla McLaughlin.
Williamson’s future with the district has not been settled. School board members had been scheduled to meet Feb. 27 to reconsider renewing Williamson’s contract. Only three board members showed up so the board could not meet due to lack of a quorum.
With about 200 people waiting for the board meeting that never happened, school superintendent David Whisenhunt conveyed a town hall forum and invited anyone who wanted to speak their thoughts on Williamson. All of those who spoke supported Williamson.
Whisenhunt also said school officials learned after the Feb 12 vote that because Williamson is on a probationary contract, state school law requires that the board have a separate vote to terminate the contract. That vote did not occur, Whisenhunt said, so Williamson’s contract was not terminated.
