Brownwood police arrested a man and a woman on child endangerment and drug charges Friday after responding to a report of an unattended 3-year-old boy in an apartment parking lot.
Austin Carroll, 20, and his 24-year-old girlfriend, Sydney Ross — the child’s mother — were booked into the Brown County Jail on charges of abandoning/endangering a child by criminal negligence, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance, police said.
According to an email from Brownwood police:
Officer Paul Chrisman was dispatched at noon to the Brownwood Apartments, 322 Bluffview, after the apartment manager found the child in the parking lot. Chrisman learned the child was potentially away from his guardian for about 45 minutes.
Sgt. Zane Taylor, detective Robert Lee and a local Child Protective Services worker arrived to assist.
With the assistance of the office manager, officers located the apartment where the child likely lived. Officers made several attempts to get someone to answer the door and eventually identified Ross as the child’s mother and Carroll as her boyfriend. It appeared both were asleep prior to officers’ arrival.
Investigation into how the child left the apartment led officers to the discovery of small amounts of marijuana and cocaine. Carroll and Ross were taken to the Brown County Jail, and the boy was left in the care of CPS.
