Brownwood police arrested a motorist on felony DWI and other charges after leaving the scene of an accident late Friday night and trying to  choke an officer later at Brownwood Regional Medical Center, police said.

David Hernandez, 39, Edcouch, Texas, was booked into the Brown County Jail on charges of DWI third or more, assault on a public servant and duty on striking unattended vehicle, jail records state.

Hernandez is free on bonds totaling $22,500.

According to an email from Brownwood police:

Officers responded at 11:40 p.m. Friday to the 2300 block of Vine on a report that the driver had fled the scene after a vehicle crash.

Officers learned the vehicle had struck a parked vehicle and contained documents identifying Hernandez as the owner.

Officers were notified the driver had walked to a home in the 2700 block of Vine. Officers located the driver at that location. The driver displayed behaviors consistent with intoxication and was taken to BRMC    Due to possible injuries.

While at the emergency room, the driver became combative and tried to choke an officer who was attempting to restrain him. The man was medically cleared and taken to the Brown County Jail without further incident.
