Ashton Figueroa intercepted Brenham quarterback Garrison Weiss with 58 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 31-26 Cedar Creek victory in a District 13-5A opener at Memorial Stadium.
Cedar Creek (2-2, 1-0) went up 24-7 on a 19-yard field goal with 11:12 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Cubs (1-3, 0-1) scored on the ensuing kickoff as Lonterrious McClain returned it 78 yards.
The Eagles seemed to put it away on a 2-yard quarterback keeper by Hunter Hughston to forge ahead 31-14.
But Brenham wasn’t finished. Weiss connected with Carson Draehn on a 5-yard scoring strike with 4:33 left.
On its next possession, the Cubs struck again on 44-yard screen pass from Weiss to Tyree Jackson. The extra-point failed, and Brenham narrowed it to 31-26.
The first half belonged to Cedar Creek. Brenham had only 47 total yards on offense and two first downs. The Eagles drove 69 yards on the game’s first possession with Hughston scoring from the one.
Brenham exploited a weakness in the Eagles’ kickoff coverage on the ensuing play. Trey Lawhun took the kick on the left sideline and dashed through the middle and outran the entire Eagles’ defense for a 90-yard score.
Cedar Creek’s Dominic Mojica scored from the 8-yard line on a quick trap up the middle late in the second quarter. Javon Livingston caught passes of 35- and 11-yards on the drive.
Livingston was wide open behind the Brenham defense on a 61-yard touchdown from Hughston in the third quarter to extend the lead to 21-7.
Cedar Creek faces crosstown rival Bastrop next Friday.
