A Brown County Jail inmate who walked off a road crew late Tuesday morning, spawning a massive manhunt by multiple agencies, was taken into custody around 7:24 p.m. outside Brownwood Regional Medical Center, Sheriff Vance Hill said via text message.
The inmate, William Robert Smith Jr., 21, was captured after “an observant citizen who had seen the news release” about Smith’s escape notified authorities, Hill said.
A vehicle the inmate is suspected of stealing from Ratliff Steel was recovered, Hill said.
Sheriff’s officials earlier put out a press release saying Smith walked away from the Precinct 1 barn on U.S. Highway 377 South at 11:25 a.m., and sought the public’s help in finding him.
Smith was initially arrested Oct. 1 on misdemeanor charges of interfering with an emergency call and resisting arrest, jail records showed.
Details as to what Smith was doing at the hospital or his capture were not available Tuesday night.
“We didn’t stop until he was subdued,” Hill said.
Hill also said he wants to thank the agencies that helped the sheriff’s office in the search for Smith.
