A press packet provided by the theatre department explains that  “Newsies” tells the story of a rag-tag team of boys at the turn of the 20th century selling newspapers n the streets of New York City

When Joseph Pulitzer, the owner of the World Newspaper Company, ups his prices of papers, the newsboys of lower Manhattan form a union and strike against the strongest and wealthiest in New York City.

The boys defy the odds and after losing members of the union to a children’s prison, the leader disappearing for days, getting beat ruthlessly and enduring other trials, the newsboys come out on top with a strong compromise with the owners of the paper companies.
