Sheriff’s deputies who responded to a burglary in progress at the storage units behind the Sportsman Center Monday arrested two men at the site, sheriff’s officials said.

Jeffery Shane Hamill Jr., 23, and Donald Gene Gilbert, 34, both of Brownwood, were booked into the Brown County Jail on burglary of a building charges, jail records state. Both men remained jailed Tuesday in lieu of bonds totaling $5,000 each.

According to a report by deputy Andre Smoot:

Smoot was dispatched to the storage units at 2:35 p.m. on a report that two men on bicycles were going in and out of several storage units. Smoot saw that two of the units contained one bicycle each.

Smoot heard over the radio that Chief Deputy for Corrections James Stroope had two men on the ground at gunpoint. Smoot found Stroope, who was with two men identified as Hamill and Gilbert.

Smoot retrieved items from the men’s pockets that were later identified as items stolen from the units. One of the men had soot from an earlier fire at the units on his face and shirt.

“This leads me to believe that (the suspect) had been rummaging through items inside several units,” Smoot’s report states. “I believe (the suspect) was providing me a false story about trying to find a dog.”

The bicycles found in the storage units belonged to the suspects, Smoot’s report states.
