If you are planning to enroll in 4-H for the 2019-2020 year and would like to pay your membership dues with cash or check, you must do so before Sept. 30. If taking advantage of this method, it must be completed at the Brown County Extension Office.

If you plan on serving as an adult volunteer, you will need to complete your registration by Oct. 1, as this will be the date that Brown County 4-H sends a registration check to cover fees. After Oct. 1, we will only be sending registration in every two months. Reminder if you are working with or providing transportation to any youth in 4-H you MUST register as an adult volunteer.

We will be having an FCS Coalition meeting on at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Extension Office. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss and plan Food & Nutrition projects and workshop. We are asking for any adult leader or youth to attend the meeting if you are interested in being on the Brown County FCS Coalition. For more information, contact Courtney Parrott.

It is that time already to start thinking about stock shows. The fall stock shows that are coming up are West Texas Fair, State Fair, and Heart of Texas Fair. The deadline to enter the fall major stock shows are as follows:

• Heart of Texas Fair, Sept. 4

The entry forms are available at the Extension Office. If you have any questions, please contact Nick Gonzales

If you are showing a heifer at a major stock show that has not previously been state validated or has changed owners, they will need to be validated. Heifers that are only participating in the Brown County Youth Fair do not need to be validated.

The deadline to turn in your order for validation identification numbers is Wednesday, Sept. 11. The cost will be $15/UIN but families only must pay for the heifers they physically validate. Please make sure you have registration papers in hand at validation. Every heifer needs to have an ID, either a brand or tattoo. Please ensure that tattoos/brands are done and legible before validation.

Dates to Remember:

• Sept. 11 - Turn in number of heifers you will be validating to the Extension Office

• Oct. 29 - Physical Validation, 9 a.m. at Bob Clark's pens

• Nov. 1 - Deadline Original Registration Papers Must be in Exhibitors Name

For more information, contact the Extension Office at 325-646-0386.

Remember rabbits wear a fur coat year-round and must stay cool during the heat of summer. If possible, move inside. Place a small litter box in one corner of the cage. Rabbits are very easily litter box trained. Use cat litter in the box to help with an ammonia smell.

If you must leave them outside, place a frozen water bottle in the cage with your rabbit, any size several times a day.

Place a soaker hose around your cage. A mister works well on top of cages.

Place a wet piece of burlap or rug on top of the cage.

Place a ceramic tile in the cage and wet it.

Do not wet rabbit completely but you can mist their face and ears.

Rabbits cool their bodies by releasing heat through their ears. Fresh, clean, cool water is a must throughout the day. Put ice cubes in a bottle or water bowl. Most rabbits go off feed during heat. A handful of oak leaves; never sprayed with insecticides, will help. Remember if you give treats try slices of frozen bananas, teaspoon of oatmeal, apple slices, or carrots: make sure they have been washed before feeding your rabbit.

If you have any questions, contact Patricia Becktold at 325-646-4753.

The enrollment process for the 2019-2020 4-H year bega Aug. 15. All 4-H families, new and returning, are encouraged to log in and enroll to become an official 4-H member.

As you begin your enrollment for the year, here are some tips in using 4-H CONNECT:

If you already have a profile DO NOT create another one!

If you lost your email and password call the county office so we can reset, it for you.

An active membership will not be granted until the $25.00 participation fee is paid on 4-H Connect!

You cannot register or participate in an event until your profile is active.

When you are doing your re-enrollment for the 2019-2020 4-H Year please make sure you update your address, phone number, and e-mail address.

For any youth who is joining 4-H in 2019-2020 for the first time as a 3rd grader we ask for you not to enroll until Sept. 1, which is actual first day of the new 4-H year and what is used to calculate grade/age. If a 2nd grader moving into 3rd grade enrolls before Sept. 1 it will “tag” them as a Clover Kid, not charge an enrollment fee and lock them in as a Clover Kid for the year.

Don’t wait until the last minute to enroll because after Oct. 31 the cost increases to $30.
