Special to the Bulletin

A drawing to determine the winners of a handcrafted king-sized Texas quilt and secretary’s desk were recently held during a luncheon at the District Office of the Texas Department of Transportation in Brownwood.

The nine-county Brownwood district has three employees who have serious health conditions that have created a financial burden for each family. In an effort to help, fundraisers were organized by TxDOT employees who volunteered time after-hours and on weekends to sell tickets and collect donations to help support their fellow employees.

The king-sized Texas quilt was created and donated by Kessa Compton, a TxDOT employee from the Stephens County maintenance office in Breckenridge. The handcrafted secretary’s desk was donated by TxDOT retiree George Ogden of Brownwood.

Julie Atchison of McCulloch County purchased the winning ticket at the Heartland Mall in Brownwood during the Home Improvement Show held in March. Copperas Cove resident Christen Starks took home the secretary’s desk after purchasing her ticket in Lampasas during the city-wide garage sale.
