Two of the Brownwood City Council’s three new members took oaths of office Tuesday and joined the remaining incumbents for a brief council meeting.

Mayor Bert Massey swore in Ward 2 councilman H.D. Jones and Ward 5 councilman Jerry DeHay. Massey said Carl McMillan, the new Ward 3 councilman, was absent because of an earlier obligation and will be sworn in at the May 22 council meeting.

The council canvassed the results from Saturday’s election. Brown County Elections Administrator Suzy Young made it official:

In Ward 2, Jones received 964 votes to incumbent Ed McMillian’s 410 votes. In Ward 3, McMillan received 725 votes, followed by incumbent Grady Chastain with 457 votes and Trey Davis with 180 votes. In Ward 5, DeHay received 849 votes and incumbent Charles Lockwood received 525 votes.

DeHay and Jones made brief statements in which they thanked supporters. “I hope I can prove myself,” Jones said.

Mayor Pro-tem Dave Fair thanked the outgoing councilmen for their service. Fair said they’d done a good job and also said he looks forward to serving with the new councilmen.

“You ran a good campaign, and that is to your credit,” Fair told the new council members.
