A Brownwood man was indicted on charges of retaliation and tampering with a witness in connection with a robbery trial that began Monday.
The Brown County Grand Jury returned the indictment on Sept. 6 against Stephonze Rea Balfour, who was one of three people indicted earlier in the Jan. 14 robbery and shooting of a Lake Brownwood man.
Authorities alleged in court documents that Balfour sent letters to one of his co-defendants in the robbery case. Balfour that threatened the co-defendant and pressured him to testify falsely, authorities alleged.
Balfour has already pleaded guilty in the robbery case and been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Balfour also said in court that he is accepting a plea deal in the retaliation and witness tampering cases that will bring terms of 10 years in prison and two years in state jail, District Attorney Micheal Murray said.
Kris Balfour has also pleaded guilty in the robbery case and been sentenced to 12 years in prison, Murray said.
The third co-defendant, Phillip Michael Johnson, went on trial Monday in 35th District Court.
