A burglar apparently seized the opportunity of finding a car unlocked with the keys left inside Sunday night, and took the car.

When Leslie Davis went to bed Sunday, his 2002 Mitsubishi Montero was sitting in the drive. At 6 a.m. Monday, when Davis’s wife looked out in the driveway of their home in the 1300 block of Holcomb, the SUV was gone.

According to the police report filed by Stephanie Morgan with the Brownwood Police Department, the SUV’s doors were not locked and the keys had been left inside. Morgan filed the information about the vehicle in a stolen car database. By 1:45 p.m. Monday, the report said, the Comanche County Sheriff’s Office had apparently located the vehicle, but the finding “had not been confirmed.”

A burglar also took advantage of an unlocked door in the 900 block of Booker Monday night and stole a “trick” Mongoose bicycle Casey Rawlins left in his living room.

According to a report filed by Sky Self, with the Brownwood police, Rawlins had left his residence for a few minutes to visit a friend, and when he returned his bike was missing. Rawlins told Self he had left the door unlocked to the residence, and Self reported there were no signs of forced entry.

In other police reports filed Tuesday, Mary Stanley, owner of The Turtle restaurant, reported the theft of two pieces of equipment, a pair of Edlund Scales, valued at $380, and a Robot Coupe blender, valued at $700. Two employees of The Turtle were being considered as suspects, but as of Tuesday morning no arrests had been made, according to a report filed by Johnny Jackson.

At approximately 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, a customer leaving Wal-Mart set off the alarm and refused to stop so greeter Joe McCory could check her bags. Brownwood Police Sgt. Vince Ariaz, ordered Rachel Hendershot of Hamilton to stop, but she told him she had to leave because she was ill. Ariaz insisted Hendershot not leave, go back inside the store and allow her purse to be searched. The search revealed three digital cameras, two valued at $79.77 each and a third valued at $59.77, all from Wal-Mart. After being allowed to visit the restroom, Hendershot was arrested by Ariaz and taken to the Brown County Jail.
