Bulletin Staff Report
United Blood Services of San Angelo issued an emergency critical appeal Wednesday for O negative blood type donors.
Several blood drives are scheduled throughout the region, Linda Grace said from the blood services San Angelo office. They include a drive Saturday at the Brownwood Independent School District administrative office on Southside Drive. The drive is being sponsored by the Brownwood High School Key Club.
“We have one day’s supply of O negative blood type on our shelf,” Grace said. “The 10 hospitals that we are the sole provider of blood and its products have a very limited amount on their shelves. If there was an emergency, we would not have the blood on hand.”
Donors must be 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health to donate. Donors age 16 will need a parent to sign a minor donor permit. A permit form should be available in the high school office. Donors ages 16 to 22 years will also be subject to additional height and weight requirements.
Donations typically decline in December due to illness and travel, but the supply crisis has developed earlier in the month than usual.
Donors can donate at the United Blood Services donation center in San Angelo or one of the following mobile blood drives:
•Terrill Manufacturing, 2816 Martin Luther King, San Angelo, 7 a.m. to noon Friday.
