What was potentially a very expensive bonfire fueled by petroleum was tapped out Saturday morning by the efforts of Early and Zephyr volunteer firefighters. Early VFD Chief Travis Eoff said the fire at an oil tank battery in southeastern Brown County was promptly extinguished by the application of foam, after trucks negotiated soggy pastures during heavy rains to reach it. The fire, about one mile north of Turkey Peak, was started by a lightning strike that blew the metal cap off with such force that it landed about 110 yards away. The name of the owner of the property was not immediately available. Photo by Diana Kelcy
