AUSTIN — State Rep. Jim Keffer (R-Eastland) will chair the House Ways and Means Committee and will also join the important Pensions and Investments Committee, his office announced Monday.

Appointments were made over the weekend by House Speaker Tom Craddick of Midland.

“There are many concerns facing this state, such as solvency of the teacher retirement system, energy and natural resources, immigration and property tax relief,” Keffer said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in addressing these issues.”

The Ways and Means Committee is considered among the most powerful of committees as it has jurisdiction over all proposals to change state taxes or revenues, change the Tax Code or divert funds from the state treasury. Keffer has chaired that committee for the past two years. The Pensions and Investments Committee oversees public retirement systems, securities and investments.

Keffer represents House District 60 which encompasses Brown, Eastland, Hood, Palo Pinto, Shackelford and Stephens counties.
