Bulletin Staff Report
Construction on a new traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. Highway 67-377 and Sudderth Drive in Early is under way, according to the Brownwood District of the Texas Department of Transportation.
An increase in student population, new school buildings and the relocation of the football stadium to the high school campus created the need for a signal, officials said. After the construction phase at the school is complete, traffic patterns will change. Buses will have a new drop-off location, as will parents who pick up or drop off their kids at school.
The signal will allow easier movement of traffic at high peak times.
The project is scheduled to have the least impact as possible, TxDOT officials said.
Phase I will include work that will most affect traffic. The project includes acceleration and deceleration lanes at Sudderth Drive. An island at the intersection will allow only right-in and right-out turns. Construction of the new acceleration/deceleration lanes along with the drainage and curb and gutter work are expected to be completed by the first day of school.
Phase 2 of the project will include the installation of the signal arm and signal heads. The signal is scheduled to be operational by the first of next year.
Tommy Willis Electric of Abilene was awarded the $248,000 project.
