Charles Douglas “Doug” Jones passed from this life on Dec. 12, 2016, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center following a short illness. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. Funeral services will take place 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 15 in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Doug Hurt, longtime friend of the family, officiating.  Burial will follow immediately after at the Trickham Cemetery.

Doug was born on Sept. 23, 1933, in Zephyr, to the parentage of Charlie “Wildy” Jones and Gladys Lemons Jones. Doug attended schools in Zephyr and after finishing his education began working for a seismograph crew, traveling all over Texas and New Mexico. Doug was not alone in these travels, as he married Wanda Lou Stearns on March 15, 1952, after meeting her and mercilessly pursuing her until she gave in and said “yes” to his marriage proposals. She was the love of his life, his angel, and he kept her on a pedestal until her passing in 2002. To this union was born three children: Sharon Lee Jones Wright, Donna Kay Jones, and Larry Douglas Jones.

Doug left his job working for the seismograph crew and went to work for GTE and was a loyal and hard-working employee for 42 years, finishing up his career at the Central Office on Fisk Avenue. Never one to sit around and be lazy, Doug then began a second career at Kroger’s. To top it all off, he even worked a part-time job at the carwash by the bowling alley on Austin Avenue. Doug still had time to walk a good 10 miles a day, in addition to his two jobs. His family used to get tickled at him mowing “those old ladies’ lawns” (his words!) in his limited spare time, because the aforementioned “old ladies” were all younger than Doug!

His beloved wife, Wanda, left him for her heavenly reward in 2002. Doug married Marian Slayton in 2005 and stayed with her until his passing.

Doug loved nothing more than watching his kids or grandkids play sports, and professional sports came in a close second after them. His favorite teams were all Texas teams: the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, and the Dallas Mavericks. His family knew not to call when one of those teams was playing, because you could not keep his attention on the phone and it was obvious that he would rather be watching the game!

Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Susan Jones; his wife, Wanda Jones; his daughter, Donna Kay Jones; his grandson, Jeremy David Jones; and his granddaughter, Teresa Michelle Allen.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Jones and her children Liz Ann, Jyl, Jim, and Kelly; daughter, Sharon Wright of Odessa; son, Larry Jones and wife Holly of Lubbock; sister, Judy Roach and husband Jackie of Wimberley; brother, Mike Jones of Wimberley; and numerous nieces and nephews, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren that will dearly miss their “Grandaddy.”
