Dub passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Dec. 11, 2019, two days before his 93rd birthday. A visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel, 303 Early Blvd, Early, Texas, with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m.
Dub was born Dec. 13, 1926 in Jones County to Tom and Eunice Baker Rumfield. He was born at home during a snow storm. Granddad Baker went for the doctor in his buggy, but when they returned, Dub was already born. Dub always thought he was a pioneer. At the age of one his parents moved from Jones County to Dickens County in a covered wagon pulled by four horses and leading two saddle horses. His Dad put him in a saddle at the age of 5.
Dub started to school in the first grade at Lower Red Mud in a two room school house. In second grade they moved to Upper Red Mud. His Dad sold the farm and the cattle and they moved to Spur in the third grade and that is where he graduated High School where he was a star running back and helped the Spur Bulldogs win back-to-back district titles. Three days after graduation Dub went into the Army where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. After his service he returned home to help the family. Dub wore many hats through his life time. His first love was being a cowboy; he was also a heavy equipment operator and a truck driver to name a few of his occupations. He married Margaret Flynn in 1953 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They had a daughter Melba LaVoy, who died shortly after birth and three sons, Tom, Steve, and Dennis.
Dub is survived by his soul mate of 27 years, Pat Meade; a son, Tom Rumfield of Oplin, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Tiffany Rumfield of Brownwood; son, Stephen Meade and wife Janet of Zephyr; daughter, Susan Rumfield of Early; daughter, Debbie Gray and husband Kevin of Houston; five granddaughters, Donna Rumfield, Leslie Rumfield, Stevi Rumfield Mosley and husband Brent of Early, Kelcey Baros of College Station, and Michelle Doll and husband CJ; grandsons, Tommy Rumfield of Austin and Hunter Gabriel of Cyprus; great-grandsons, Dolph, Randy and Zach Rumfield, Blake Gonzales and Cody Gonzales, Maddox Hair, Taten Baldridge, Luke Valdez and Logan Gabriel; and great-granddaughters, Maddie Gabriel and Bailey Baros.
