John D. Montgomery, age 83, of Cross Plains, passed away on Wednesday, Dec.10, 2008.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at First Baptist Church in Cross Plains with Pastor Ronnie B. White officiating; burial will follow in the Cross Plains Cemetery. The family will be at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Cross Plains for visitation at 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday night, Dec. 12, 2008.
John D. was born to Olen and Elvis (Barr) Montgomery on Dec. 1, 1925, on a farm west of Cross Plains. The family moved to the Burnt Branch Community where he went to school through the sixth grade, when the Burnt Branch Community consolidated with Cross Plains. He finished school and graduated in 1942. He played football and ran track and was active in the FFA program. He received an award for Callahan County Conservation farmer of the year in 1998. He helped with the organization of the Callahan County Central Appraisal District where he was a director from 1980 to 1991. He served nine years on the Cross Plains School Board. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cross Plains.
He is survived by two sons, Dr. Mike D. Montgomery and wife Aimee of Abilene; Randy Montgomery and wife Sharlotte of Cross Plains; daughter, Cindy McCaghren and husband Johnny of San Benito, Texas; two sisters, Lerlene Fortune of Cross Plains; Verma Lee McCowen of Hawley; and a special friend and loving companion for years, Priscilla Latimer Perry of Cross Plains; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grand-children; and two great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one grandson.
