Grace Hughes Floyd of Blanket, Texas, died on Dec. 5, 2008, at the age of 93 after living for several months with the kind caregivers at the Songbird Lodge in Brownwood.
She was born in Brownwood, Texas on April 15, 1915, to Henry M. and Molly Burk Hughes and is survived by sons Terry Hughes Floyd (wife Caren) of Austin and Joe Henry Floyd of Blanket, as well as grandchildren David Hudson Floyd (wife Alissa) of Austin and Callie Vee Miner (husband Adam) of Los Angeles, Calif. Her brother Dr. Sidney Warren Hughes passed away in 1991.
Grace attended high school in Brownwood and graduated from Howard Payne College in 1935. She was married to Earl Floyd in 1936 and they enjoyed 50 years of marriage before his death in 1986. They moved to their farm and ranch between Blanket and Zephyr in 1940 and lived there all of their active lives.
Grace was an elementary school teacher who moved into middle school Special Education in the late 1950s, finishing her career in the Brownwood school district in the 1970s. A bridge player until the last few years, she had friends all over the country and traveled widely, driving her own car into her late 80s. Throughout her long life, Grace attended Coggin Avenue Baptist Church, Blanket Baptist Church, and Bethel Baptist Church.
Visitation will be Sunday evening, Dec. 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Heartland Funeral Home in Early. Graveside services and internment will be at the Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 8. For details, contact Heartland Funeral Services in Early at (325) 646-9424.
