CROSS PLAINS — Funeral services for Jimmie Lee Payne, 89, of Rising Star Nursing Center will be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the First Baptist Church in Cross Plains with the Rev. Margaret Friend officiating, assisted by Pastor Ronnie B. White. Burial will follow in the Cross Plains Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Higginbotham Funeral Home.
He died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, in Brownwood.
He was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Callahan County to Lee and Ida (McGowen) Payne. He grew up in the Dressy community and graduated from Cross Plains High School. He was married to Virginia Neeb on June 1, 1940. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a farmer, a butcher for Piggly Wiggly, and as manager of JRB Grocery until he retired after 25 years of service.
He was active in the United Way, served on the cemetery board, the city council and the Housing Authority. He also served as a trustee for the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Rising Star; two sons, James Payne and wife Edith of Fort Stockton, and Jerry Payne and wife Laura of Green River, Wyo.; two daughters, Kathy Purvis and husband Ray of Cross Plains and Melissa Baughman and husband Kenny of Magnolia; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Theola Neeb.
