Mass for Jose “Joe” Sanchez, 88, of Zephyr, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brownwood.

Interment will follow in Zephyr Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at the funeral home.

Mr. Sanchez passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, surrounded by his loved ones at his home in Zephyr.

Jose V. Sanchez was born on Oct. 14, 1918, in Menard Texas, one of seven children born to Lazaro and Margarita Valdez Sanchez. He was raised and educated in Menard and on Jan. 26, 1938, he married the love of his life, Josephine Rodriquez.

Mr. Sanchez served his country as a surgical technician and sergeant in the 234th Army Air Force Unit. In 1953, Jose and Josephine made their home in Zephyr, where he would spend the next 54 years of his life as an active member of the Zephyr community. He was a member of the Zephyr Riding Club, the Zephyr Rodeo Association and the Sheriffs Posse, and had served as a jury commissioner in Brown County for a number of years. Mr. Sanchez had also served on the Zephyr School Board for 18 years and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Jose had been a rancher all of his life. The things that mattered most to him was being involved in church activities, working the ranch and taking care of his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 70 years, Josephine R. Sanchez of Zephyr; his son, Joe Richard Sanchez and wife, Isabell, of Zephyr; grandchildren, Jennifer Whittington and husband Cody, Angie Sanchez and Holly Sanchez; two great-grandchildren, Alexander Whittington and Ariel Sanchez; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lazaro and Margarita Sanchez; two brothers, Pedro and Margarito Sanchez; and five sisters, Nieves Ortegon, Rita Torres, Maria Canales, Consuelo Perez and Julia Roman.
