Donald Davis, a longtime resident of Doylestown, Pa., died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at his home. He was 79.
He is survived by his loving wife, Mary S. Davis of Doylestown.
Born in Abilene, Texas, the son of Thomas A. and Huena (Thomas) Davis.
Don was a loving man with a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit, who enjoyed making others laugh. Becoming blind at a very young age, he and his wife May were passionate about teaching braille to blind children, enabling them to learn to read and write. He was instrumental in the early ‘80s in establishing the Jenny Beck Chapter of the Braille Revival League, and was a past president and corresponding secretary. He was also a member of the American Council of the Blind. He was a proud “graduate” of The Seeing Eye, a foundation of seeing-eye dog owners who have mastered the handling of their canine guides for over 50 years. An ordained minister who would often fill in for vacationing clergy or take interim pastorships, Don’s true passion was his work as a rehabilitation counselor for the blind, enabling recently blind individuals to function and live in society.
Having a fondness for classical music, Don was also a talented vocalist with a wonderful baritone voice. He was the owner of “Don’s Coffee Shop” in the Westchester County Courthouse for many years and was proud of the fact that not only did he serve quality coffee, but also served quality food.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children; Helena M. Jester and her husband Kenneth of Hanover, Md., Christine Othelle McCarthy and her husband Louis of Greensboro, N.C., Paul H. Davis and his wife Vicki of Clyde; his 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Mr. Davis’ funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Doylestown.
Graveside services will take place at 1 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2007, at the Salt Creek Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.
