Brown County residents got a taste of an old-fashioned Fourth of July with the Heart of Texas Freedom Celebration in Bangs last weekend. Ice cream, music and fireworks helped set the stage for a series of events on Friday, the Fourth of July itself, and on Saturday.
From Lake Brownwood to Comanche to the Brownwood Country Club, the area is literally bursting with activities in celebration of Independence Day. And for those who want a more reflective event to start the holiday, the Pecan Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League will again hold a flag-raising ceremony at 8 a.m. Friday at the Douglas MacArthur Academy of Freedom on the Howard Payne University campus, across Coggin Avenue from Brookshire’s.
Whether the long holiday weekend finds you traveling, grilling, boating or just spending time in the back yard, the Fourth of July is a time of celebrating something all Americans have in common — our freedom. Our liberties have been won and repeatedly secured by the efforts of hundreds of thousands of patriots. When we share that truth with each other, and practice it, we are perpetuating it. Choose your event, attend and enjoy. America has much to celebrate.
