The Christmas celebrating is behind us, the bargains at the stores have been inspected and selected, but there are still a few days left before the usual routine returns. What’s there to do in Brownwood?

Put at the top of that list the two days of high school action in store at the Brownwood High School as the annual Underwood’s Christmas Classic gets under way Monday.

Area teams from Brownwood, Early, Bangs, May, Brady, Richland Springs and Goldthwaite are participating, but so are teams from more distant cities - like Granbury, Stephenville, Aledo, San Angelo, Snyder, Palestine and Sweetwater. In all, the campus will host 20 games before the the dust settles on Tuesday night.

Many local basketball fans have this week between Christmas and New Year’s as a holiday, so this is one tournament where attendance at games could be larger than might otherwise be the case. And it should be larger. The reputation of this tournament means more visitors will be coming to town, and they are always welcome.

This tournament has become a post-Christmas fixture in Brownwood, and it’s proven to be the ideal opportunity for many teams to sharpen their skills over the holidays before district schedules begin after the first of the year.

Brownwood area residents don’t have to go far this week to enjoy some quality high school sports.
