To the editor:
This letter is in response to the letter to the editor printed on Friday, Aug. 17, written by Stacy and Nancy Jackson. First of all, the city council did not “allow” Vince Ariaz to retire. In fact, the city council had no authority to prevent him from retiring. That was his right pursuant to the rules and regulations of the Texas Municipal Retirement System. By accepting his retirement, the city council not only saved the taxpayers money by not having to pay the cost of defending an appeal, but facilitated the police department’s ability to fill an officer vacancy quicker.
Second, the City’s acceptance of his retirement will in no way impact Ariaz’s responsibilities through the criminal justice system and certainly will not jeopardize the safety of our children. Although I may be biased, I think that our city council is doing a great job.
