To the editor:

I am a relative and supporter of a recovering addict. I am writing to try and inform the city of Brownwood and Brown County about a program called Winner’s Circle. The program is not only for individuals who desire to remain alcohol and drug free, but those who also choose to be crime free. This program could also be a preventative care program for young adults.

If a young adult was heading in the same direction as the people in the program, they could go and hear about stories that the adults have to say. This could help them in not wanting to end up the same way they have. This program is not only for older adults. There are people participating in the program who are in their late teens and early 20s. The program also has people who participate in the program that have no criminal background. They are the supporters for the program.

I have seen first hand how this program affects someone in a positive way. He has been sober for three years and is still remaining to be a “winner.” The program has not only helped him but has also helped my family understand how drugs affect people. It has also strengthened our relationship with one another by becoming a closer family and support group to not only him but to other “winners” as well.

The meetings are held on Monday and Thursday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 408 Mulberry St.
