The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets returned to the friendly confines of the Brownwood Coliseum and with that came the end of a two-game losing streak.

The Yellow Jackets remained undefeated on their home court, improving to 5-0 in Brownwood with a 70-62 victory over the Louisiana College Wildcats Monday night.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets (8-11, 4-5) moved within two games of ASC West leader Sul Ross (10-8, 6-3) — which Howard Payne visits at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“This was a great team effort to pull out this win,” said Yellow Jackets head coach Troy Drummond. “I’m very proud of the way our kids played defensively and finished plays. It was great to see them bounce back after a disappointing weekend.”

HPU led throughout the majority of the contest, but an 8-0 spurt by Louisiana College (7-9, 4-4) — which slipped from second place to fourth in the ASC East with the loss — put the Yellow Jackets in a 58-54 hole with 4:47 remaining.

The Yellow Jackets fired back with 14 of the next 16 points to seize a 68-60 advantage with 42 seconds left on the clock.

The rally began with two free throws from Khyce Randall, who followed with a bucket that knotted the score at 58-all with 4:10 to go.

Louisiana College grabbed its final lead, 60-58, at the 3:20 mark on a bucket by Anthony Gaines Jr.

The response from Howard Payne was a string of 10 consecutive points as Randall tied the score at 60 with 3:10 to go, then Bryan Adams knocked down the go-ahead bucket with 2:12 remaining. Shadd Cole then chipped in a deuce, Volney Willis added a pair of free throws and Rickey Guillory knocked down two shots from the charity stripe to conclude the run.

As a team, Howard Payne connected on 45 percent (20 of 44) of its field goal attempts, including 27 percent (4 of 15) of its three-pointers, while shooting 72 percent (26 of 36) at the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets also owned a 36-33 edge in rebounds.

D.J. Gardner scored a team-high 16 points for HPU trailed by 15 from Guillory, 12 from Randall, eight from Adams, four each from Willis, Cole and Willie Foreman, three from Cam Frank and two each from J Bailey and Evan Vaden.

Louisiana College converted just 38 percent (22 of 58) of its shots, only 22 percent (4 of 18) of its treys and a mere 60 percent (14 of 23) of its free throw attempts.

Gaines finished with a team-high 16 points for the Wildcats trailed by 13 from Steve Evans, 11 from John Parker and 10 from Dylan Brewer.

Howard Payne led 39-31 at halftime with the Yellow Jackets’ largest advantage of 12 points, 33-21, coming with 4:02 left in the first half following a pair of Gardner free throws.
