The Brownwood Lady Lions returned to their winning ways Tuesday, improving to 2-0 at Gordon Wood Stadium with a 5-1 thrashing of Gatesville.
Playing their first game in seven days, the Lady Lions (9-3-1) bounced back from a 4-1 loss at Class 6A Abilene High and inched within one victory of matching last season’s win total.
The Lady Lions needed less than three minutes to light up the scoreboard as Tristan Escamilla scored off an assist from Madison Chesser at the 37:08 mark.
Escamilla added her second goal less than 10 minutes into the contest as an unassisted goal at the 31:34 mark made the score 2-0.
Following a save by goalkeeper Lizzie McCrane, Gatesville was able to sneak in its lone goal with 28:07 left before halftime.
McCrane recorded another key save, then Brownwood added an insurance goal with 15 minutes left in the opening half as Kelsie Pulley scored on a penalty kick after Escamilla was dragged to the turf.
The third of McCrane’s four saves came on a corner kick late in the first half, while Escamilla rounded out the first-half scoring with her third goal at the 7:34 juncture.
Ashley Strong netted the only goal of the second half with 27:55 remaining, while McCrane collected her final save and Channing Barron notched a save in goal.
The next action for the Lady Lions is at 6 p.m. Tuesday when they host KIPP Austin College.
