Brownwood posts 3-1 weekend mark, hosts Bangs in home opener Monday night

SNYDER — The Brownwood Lions finished the Snyder baseball tournament with three victories in four outings, edging the Idalou Wildcats, 3-2, in Saturday's finale.

Brownwood began the tournament with a 3-0 victory over Big Spring Thursday, followed with an 8-3 loss to Boerne Friday afternoon and picked up a rain-shortened 3-1 win over host Snyder Friday night.

In Saturday's contest, the Lions (5-6) notched the victory despite tallying only four hits — one each by Cole Fowler, Rawlings Rios, Kory Owen and Blaine Hughes.

Grant Fanara earned the win on the mound as he tossed a complete-game six-hitter with six strikeouts and one walk.

Brownwood broke a 1-all tie with Idalou (2-9) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Owen kept the inning alive with a two-out single into shallow center field. With McLane Moore pinch-running, Hughes followed with a shot to the gap in deep left-center field that resulted in a two-run inside-the-park home run and 3-1 Brownwood lead.

Idalou's top of the seventh featured a leadoff walk, a steal of second and a dropped third strike to put runners on the corners. A one-out RBI single over shortstop cut Brownwood's lead to 3-2. But Fanara retired the next two batters on pop flies to hold on for the victory.

The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

Fowler led off with a single, then stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An RBI squeeze bunt by Carson Cloy plated Fowler to stake Brownwood to the lead.

Idalou drew even in the top of the sixth as a walk, error and single loaded the bases with one out. A single up the middle scored the leader runner, but the second runner was gunned down at the plate and a throw down to third resulted in the tag for an inning-ending double play.

The Lions open the home portion of their schedule at 7 p.m. Monday when the Bangs Dragons visit Morris Southall Field.
