BELTON — Playing in their first game since March 5, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets erupted for four runs in the top of the first inning.
From that point on, however, Denison University — located in Granville, Ohio — dominated for an 11-4 non-conference victory Tuesday night at Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Howard Payne (6-6) finished with five hits — two by David Groves and one each by Brandon Garrett, Cody Brown and Cliff Lunceford. Lunceford contributed two RBIs while Groves and Brown recorded one each.
On the mound, Tyler Colburn took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks in 1.2 innings.
Defensively, HPU committed five errors.
The Yellow Jackets will take on Concordia-Chicago at 7 p.m. Friday in Austin.
