Brownwood to visit Stephenville Tuesday for regional quarterfinals match
WICHITA FALLS — Tristan Escamilla scored off an assist from Jaycee Lenz 2:07 into the second half, as the Brownwood Lady Lions earned a Region I-4A area championship with a 1-0 victory over the Borger Lady Bulldogs Friday night.
The Lady Lions (11-9-1) will advance to face District 4-4A rival Stephenville — a 1-0 winner over Pampa Friday afternoon — at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lem Brock Grass Field in Stephenville.
“This will be the eighth time to play them in two years,” said Lady Lions head coach Keith Robinson. “(Stephenville) is tough, big, physical, has the experience and is everything you want in a team. But deep down inside I believe we are to, and I think it’s time Brownwood bows up a little and takes it to them. And I think we’re capable of that.”
After a scoreless first half Friday against Borger, a halftime adjustment resulted in the game’s only goal
“We couldn’t quite find our forwards in the first half,” Robinson said. “We stretched them out to the flank and really couldn’t connect with them. We made a couple of changes and moved Jaycee to the middle with three up top. Early in the second half we were connecting really well. Jaycee went to the goal with some good pace, their keeper made a save and then Tristan stepped in and hammered it home.”
Defensively, the Lady Lions — led by goalkeeper Lizzie McCrane and a back row of Jamicah Bushnell, Julianne Hood, Bailey Perry and Lakyn Ratliff — posted their first shutout since Jan. 23 when they defeated LaVernia, 2-0, en route to the Kerrville tournament championship.
“Khloe Tobien had to sit out with a strained back, but Lakyn stepped in and everyone on the back row played lights out,” Robinson said. “They were mistake-free and zoned in. And Lizzie came up big with quite a few saves on the defensive end.”
