The Brownwood Lions halted a four-game skid with a 9-2 non-district victory over the Brady Bulldogs Friday night at Morris Southall Field.

The Lions (7-10, 0-3) will play their second straight non-district contest at 2 p.m. today at Carrollton Ranchview before returning to District 6-4A action Tuesday against Stephenville.

“The most important thing is the kids came out and had fun tonight,” said Lions head coach Herb Rios. “We’ve been pressing a lot and the kids have been putting a lot of pressure on themselves. I’m excited about getting to play these two games because it gives us a chance to go out and relax a little bit and get some pep in our step.”

The Lions scored in every inning but the sixth — one run each in the first and second, two apiece in the third and fourth and three in the fifth.

Brownwood finished with seven hits and six walks. Rawlings Rios and Tristan Chesser led the way with two hits each while Carson Cloy, Justin Buchanan and Graham Sharpe added one hit each. Rios and Sharpe also finished with two RBIs while Chesser, Buchanan and Grant Fanara contributed one each.

“The first half of district they’ve been a little too uptight at the plate but tonight they were looking for something to drive,” Coach Rios said.

On the mound, Cloy picked up the win as he pitched five innings and yielded a pair of runs on six hits with one strikeout and two walks. Caden Judkins worked two scoreless innings of relief and struck out four with one walk.

Though Brady collected 10 hits, the Bulldogs left seven base runners stranded.

“We didn’t walk a lot of people and that really helped us,” Coach Rios said. “It was a cold day and it’s hard to pitch in these conditions but Carson did a great job. And I was really excited to see Judkins come in and do what he did and have some success.”
