BANGS — The Early Longhorns notched their first District 7-3A baseball victory, knocking the Bangs Dragons out of the top spot in the league standings with a 6-2 triumph Friday night.
Early (5-8-1, 1-1) overcame five errors as Christian Alcorta tossed a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
The Bangs (5-8-1, 2-1) pitching combination of Chance Beck and Colton Brewer surrendered three earned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and one walk.
The Longhorns grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Abel Hernandez led off by reaching on an error, then Trace Evans doubled Hernandez home. Later in the inning, Alcorta reached on a two-out error that allowed Tristan Horton, who singled, to score the second run.
The Dragons closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the first as Beck singled home Fuqua, who reached on an error, with one out, but Bangs left two stranded.
Early blew the game open with a three-run fifth as Horton doubled home Walker Leach, who led off with a single, David Morales singled home Horton, and Alcorta’s single plated Morales.
Each team added a seventh-inning run as the Longhorns upped the lead to 6-1 on an RBI ground out by Horton that scored Hernandez, who was hit by a pitch.
Bangs’ final run was the result of Brewer reaching on an error and eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Early’s seven-hit attack featured two each from Evans and Horton and one apiece by Morales, Alcorta and Leach.
Bangs’ three hits belonged to Brewer, Beck and Tucker Tarpley.
The Longhorns visit Comanche Tuesday while the Dragons are at Clyde for non-district action.
