Bangs to face either Clyde or Colorado City in regional quarterfinals

SAN ANGELO — The Bangs Lady Dragons received a scare, but emerged with a Region I-3A area softball championship thanks to a 2-1, extra-inning victory over the Reagan County Lady Owls Friday at Central High School.

Bangs (24-4), the District 7-3A champion, tallied a run in the top of the first inning but surrendered the tying run to District 5-3A third seed Reagan County in the bottom of the sixth.

In the top of the eighth inning, Erin Anderson reached on a leadoff single to shortstop, stole second base and moved to third on a sacrifice by Vanessa Perez. With two outs in the inning, Kialie Dodson drilled a hard grounder to shortstop and beat out the throw to first base for the game-winning RBI single as Anderson raced home.

In the bottom of the eighth, Anderson — who tossed a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts — gave up a lead single and a one-out base hit, but a pickoff at second base and a grounder to second ended Reagan County's comeback attempt.

The Lady Dragons' first-inning run came when Taylor Malett led off with an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a passed ball.

Reagan County pulled even in the sixth thanks to a one-out hit batter and a two-out RBI double to left field.

The Lady Dragons finished with 10 hits — three by Malett, two each by Anderson and Haley Pitts and one apiece by Dodson, Perez and Ashton Crow — but left seven batters stranded on base.

Bangs will face either District 8-3A champion Clyde or District 5-3A runner-up Colorado City in the regional quarterfinals next weekend.
