ABILENE — The Brownwood Lady Lions posted a 2-2 record during pool play at the Abilene Bev Ball Classic Friday, rallying to earn victories in their final two matches and secure second place in their pool.

“We played really good today. I'm very proud of the girls,” said Lady Lions head coach Julie Preiss. “The two games we lost we were pushed and responded well. We're playing tomorrow in the gold bracket, which is a great accomplishment.”

The Lady Lions tallied their first victory of the season in their third pool play match, knocking off Class 3A Breckenridge by a 25-13, 25-9 count.

Torrey Miller recorded 11 kills to pace the Brownwood offense followed by three from Bailey Randle and two each from Tyra Cotton and Mikaela Smith.

Kayla McFarden's five aces were a team-high followed by four from Randle, two from Miller and one apiece from Cheyenne Stroope, Madi Gosch and Mikaela Smith. Hadley Monroe dished out nine assists while Miller contributed four.

Defensively, McFarden collected five digs followed by Randle with four, Miller with three, Annie Gillispie with two and Monroe and Alex Fowler with one each.

In their final match of the day, the Lady Lions upended Class 5A Burleson, 25-20, 25-23.

The offensive blitz was ignited by Miller with nine kills followed by Randle with eight, Smith, Ashlyn Patteson and Aleyia Cotton with three apiece and one each from McFarden and Tyra Cotton.

McFarden tallied two aces while one each came from Miller and Monroe, who collected 12 assists while Miller chipped in nine. McFarden and Randle were also credited with an assist apiece.

The defensive effort was spearheaded by McFarden's 14 digs trailed by Monroe with seven, Miller and Randle with six apiece, Patteson with three, Aleyia Cotton with two and Gillispie with one.

Randle, Miller and Smith finished with one block apiece.

The Lady Lions opened tournament action with a 13-25, 26-24, 26-24 loss to Class 5A Abilene Cooper.

Miller and Smith led the Brownwood charge with 12 kills apiece followed by Randle with six, Patteson with two and one each from Gillispie, Stroope, McFarden, Monroe, Tyra Cotton and Aleyia Cotton.

Miller served three aces, McFarden contributed a pair and one each came from Randle, Patteson and Monroe, who also dished out 21 assists. Miller chipped in six assists while Stroope, Smith, Patteson, Tyra Cotton and Aleyia Cotton added one each.

On the defensive end, McFarden notched 20 digs trailed by 14 from Randle, 13 from Monroe, six from Gillispie, four from Miller, two each from Patteson and Stroope and one apiece from Smith, Tyra Cotton and Aleyia Cotton.

Miller collected three blocks while Randle, Smith and Aleyia Cotton were credited with one each.

In a 25-18, 25-19 straight-set loss to Class 6A El Paso Eldorado, Miller chalked up six kills trailed by Aleyia Cotton with five, Smith and Patteson with two apiece and McFarden, Randle and Tyra Cotton with one each.

Miller and McFarden both served two aces while Smith added one. Monroe recorded nine assists while Miller was credited with five.

Defensively, Gillispie and McFarden contributed five digs apiece, Miller added four, Randle finished with three and Fowler, Monroe and Tyra Cotton added one each.

At the net, Miller and Smith recorded one block each.

The Lady Lions (2-3) will begin bracket play in the Bev Ball Classic Saturday morning.
