ALVARADO — The Brownwood Freshman Lions rolled to a 40-16 victory over Alvarado Thursday night.

The Lions raced out to a 14-0 first-quarter advantage as Rowdee Gregory scored on a 9-yard carry, and Reece Rodgers chipped in the two-point conversion, while John Wilhelm returned a punt 60 yards for a score.

Brownwood stretched its lead to 28-8 by halftime as Damion Jones blocked a punt that Dylan Fish scooped and scored on from 28 yards out. After an Alvarado touchdown, Gregory then connected with Brayden Bushnell on a 58-yard touchdown toss.

Alvarado shaved the deficit to 28-16 in the third period, but in the fourth quarter Gregory hit Jones on a 76-yard touchdown pass after the defense stuffed the Indians at the Brownwood 11 with five minutes left. Isaac Pena wrapped up the victory with a 62-yard pick six for the final 24-point margin of victory.

Other defensive standouts included Theo Bryant with four tackles for loss, Cooper Swanzy with a pair of pass break ups and Caimon Moseley with a sack.

Alvarado 27, JV Lions 12

ALVARADO — The Brownwood JV Lions traveled to Alvarado Thursday night and wound up on the short end of a 27-12 decision.

Brownwood’s touchdowns were scored on an 8-yard run by Cain Kittrell and a 15-yard pass from Tommy Bowden to Dakota Willis. Other offensive standouts included Jared Cullins, Grayson Swanzy and Ian Moreno.

Defensively, Kittrell recorded a sack, Swanzy broke up a pass, Moreno recorded numerous tackles for loss and Ben Kallman made a stop on a two-point conversion attempt. Other standouts included Joseph Johnson, Christian Pearson, Hayden McAfee and Eloy Castillo.

The JV Lions are now 2-2 on the season.
