WICHITA FALLS – The District 5-4A runner-up Brownwood High tennis team was knocked off in the opening round of the single elimination 5-4A/6-4A area tournament Thursday morning as 6-4A third seed Iowa Park needed just 12 matches to advance with a 10-2 victory.
“We played well and several matches could have gone either way,” said Brownwood tennis head coach Mark Davis. “I'm very proud of this group. We have several freshmen, sophomores and juniors that were starters for us this fall. Things look great for spring tennis and team tennis next fall.”
Picking up victories for Brownwood were the Lady Lions No. 2 doubles team of Illiana Arenivas and Kayleigh George (4-6, 6-4, 10-8 over Sedona Swanner and Kaci Wells) and the Lions No. 2 doubles team of Matthew Thompson and Gabe Hinojosa (6-0, 4-6, 10-4 over Ryan McIlroy and Jacob Pruett).
Matches that went against the Lions were Josh Dean and Jeremy Roberson in No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-2 loss to Dallas Elmore and Byron Fisher), Tyler Langley and Michael Gomez in No. 3 doubles (6-1, 6-1 loss to Cody Wells and Chay O'Connor), Dean in No. 1 singles (5-7, 6-0, 10-3 loss to Elmore), Thompson in No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-3 loss to Fisher), Langley in No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-2 loss to Pruett) and Gomez in No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-0 loss to McIlroy).
The Lady Lions dropped matches at the No. 1 doubles spot with Kendra Renfroe and Piper Barberie (6-1, 7-6 to Andrew Pedon and Alyson Dishman); the No. 3 doubles spot with McKinzie Atkins and Cameron Hall (6-4, 7-5 to Anna Le and Lauren Hambright); and at No. 1 singles with Renfroe (6-3, 6-4 to Dishman).
In the mixed doubles match, Brownwood also came up short as Cade Rector and Heather Williams fell to the Witherspoon/Hall duo (7-5, 3-6, 10-4).
Brownwood finished the fall campaign with a 13-7 overall record.
