Howard Payne and UT-Tyler finished deadlocked at 1 after 110 minutes of American Southwest Conference men’s soccer action as the Yellow Jackets wrapped up their home schedule at Citizens National Bank Field with a tie.

The Yellow Jackets — who also drew with Ozarks Thursday with no goals scored — jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:48 into the contest when Alex Sanchez scored with an assist from Roger Bonilla.

The Patriots (8-5-1, 3-4-1) knotted the score with only four seconds remaining in the first half as Leandro Fernandez found the net.

Howard Payne finished with 10 shots, including four on frame — two by Sanchez and one each by Collin Salyers and Josue Vasquez.

UT-Tyler rattled off 19 shots with 10 on goal as Brandon McGibeny tallied seven saves for HPU.

The Yellow Jackets (2-8-3, 1-5-3) will visit Louisiana College at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Belhaven at 7:30 p.m. Saturday to conclude the regular season.



UT-Tyler 3, Lady Jackets 0


The Howard Payne Lady Jackets were unable to chalk up a second straight home victory, dropping their final American Southwest Conference women’s soccer contest at Citizens National Bank Field this season to the UT-Tyler Lady Patriots, 3-0, Saturday afternoon.

UT-Tyler (11-2, 8-1) — which won its ninth straight contest — grabbed at 1-0 lead at 29:45 with a goal by Kathleen Johnson, who was assisted by Jessica L’hoste. The Lady Patriots added their second goal three minutes before halftime when Shelby Valdepena scored.

UT-Tyler tacked on its third goal in the second half as Ashton Peaks found the net with an assist from Caroline Williams with 30:18 left on the clock.

The Lady Jackets attempted just four shots with two on goal — both by Rachel Crane, who scored HPU’s goal in the closing minutes of a 1-0 victory over Ozarks Thursday.

UT-Tyler finished with 25 shots, including 15 on goal, as HPU goal keeper Nicole Goodwin collected a dozen saves.

The Lady Jackets (4-10-1, 2-6-1) will visit Louisiana College at 4 p.m. Thursday and Belhaven at 5 p.m. Saturday to wrap up the regular season.
